Feline leukemia is an important test to have. This is a fatal disease that affects some kittens and cats. You definitely want to know if your cat has this disease before getting attached to it. Another lab test you'll need to have done is a fecal test. A sample of your cat's stool will be tested to see if there are parasites present.

Many kittens do have worms in their system, however your vet can easily take care of the problem with a dose or two of medicine. Another cost you'll need to consider is that of flea control and prevention. The most effective products are those applied to the neck each month like Frontline. Make sure you obtain the product from your vet as the brands sold in stores may not be as effective or as safe. The cost of this flea control product is approximately $18 per month.

Another one of the most common vet costs cat health issues is that of spaying or neutering. Unless you want a litter of kittens, you will need to have your cat spayed or neutered. Even if your cat will be staying inside, spaying or neutering is extremely important. Male cats who haven't been neutered spray a very odorous secretion all over their territory, while female cats experience periods of heat that can be unpleasant to deal with for them and their owners.
