A Guide to Cat Eye Health
cat owners are very considerable about the cat eye health. If you have a cat of your own or planning to bring in home a new one ,it is necessary to learn about how to find the cat that has healthy eyes. The eyes of a kitten or adult cat are often indicative of the animal's overall health and should be examined thoroughly. One thing you will often notice with many kittens are runny eyes. The eyes may water and develop a crust in the corners. This may point towards a mild to moderate infection of some sort. Even the common cold can cause eye issues in cats.
If you have obtained a kitten or cat the first thing you should do is take your new kitty to the vet for an examination. The veterinarian will examine your feline thoroughly. Sometimes all you will need to do for your cat is gently wipe the eyes with a warm wet cloth. If the eyes are especially troublesome, you may be given drops to administer. When putting eyedrops in your cat's eyes, using the proper technique can save you a lot of trouble. You may want to recruit a helper to hold your cat by the scruff of the neck which keeps them safely immobilized.
You will need to hold your cat in your lap, draping your left arm over the body of your cat. Hold your cat's head with your left hand and use your left thumb to gently pull down the eye. Now simply place the drops in each eye. If you are not administering drops but just want to examine your cat's eyes, you can use this holding technique as well. There are various things that may indicate abnormalities in the eyes. Pale pink eyes may indicate anemia. Yellow coloration may indicate a liver condition such as jaundice. Cloudiness of the eye may indicate cataracts. This is common in older animals.
While you may want to examine your cat's eyes, the best thing to do is consult your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns about cat eye health. Like in humans, the eye can indicate a variety of medical issues in felines. Your vet will be able to perform an examination which includes looking at your cat's eyes to check for underlying issues that need treatment. Luckily most eye issues in felines can be treated with a simple course of eye drops or may even resolve on their own. However, it's best to not take chances and always get your cat examined by a professional if you suspect eye problems.
