Cat Disease and Health Information for Owners
|
Cat owners should be well aware of the cat diseases and maintaining its good health. This is possible if you go through the resources that is available online and also through your veterinary doctor.Diseases that affect the cat are of many types. One of the most devastating is feline leukemia. There is no cure for this disease and it is usually fatal. Another incurable cat disease is feline AIDS. These two diseases can be detected by routine screening by your vet. There are other conditions that can be dangerous but can also be treated.
Urinary dysfunction is one of these conditions. Cats between the ages of 2 and 6 may suffer from urinary disease. This problem is most prevalent in males but can also affect female cats as well. Symptoms of urinary disease in felines may include yowling or crying when urinating, having accidents around the house and blood in the urine. It is important to take your cat to the vet right away to treat this problem because if left untreated it can lead to kidney failure. You will find food on store shelves designed to maintain good urinary health. This food can be used as a preventative measure but should not be used as a treatment.
Anemia is a problem that may arise if your cat has a problem with fleas. Fleas drink your cat's blood and an infestation can cause severe anemia which may even lead to death. Therefore, it is very important to treat fleas properly. A product like Frontline which is applied to the neck each month kills fleas, ticks and larvae. Your best bet is to get this product from your vet. There are comparable products in stores but in my own experience nothing is more effective than the flea control products sold at the veterinarian's office.
You can learn more about cat disease and health by talking to your vet, doing online research or reading some books on the subject. At your local bookstore or library you will discover countless titles devoted to cats and cat health. Check out the following titles: Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook by Delbert G. Carlson, Whole Health for Happy Cats: A Guide to Keeping Your Cat Naturally Healthy, Happy, and Well-Fed by Sandy Arora and The Cornell Book of Cats by Mordecai Siegel.
